Introduction

Located in southeastern Europe, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a mountainous country with many rural communities. BH Telecom, the country’s leading telecommunications provider, needed to deliver economical and reliable internet services to meet the needs of their customers.

Challenge

BH Telecom faced challenges in providing reliable broadband, voice, and IPTV services to underserved rural communities. Installing a traditional fiber infrastructure was cost prohibitive, especially due to the mountainous geography. To overcome these barriers, BH Telecom partnered with Telenet to deploy a wireless Triple Play service infrastructure powered by Proxim Wireless solutions.

Solution

The solution provided by Proxim Wireless met both the economic and geographic challenges, providing enhanced educational and economic opportunities and bridging the digital divide in rural Bosnia. The wireless infrastructure is a point-to-multipoint network, including base stations installed on towers and residential subscriber units. The Proxim Tsunami® 10250-BSX base stations (which use a beam steering antenna and a look-ahead scan radio to avoid interference) were combined with Proxim Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) to provide coverage. The high-speed connections enabled simultaneous IPTV streaming, VoIP, and internet browsing. Monitored through the central ProximVision Network Management System (NMS), BH Telecom can perform troubleshooting and network optimization, thereby reducing operational costs.

Result

BH Telecom’s collaboration with Telenet to deploy Proxim Wireless infrastructure is a sustainable and cost-effective model for rural connectivity. By leveraging wireless Triple Play solutions, BH Telecom expanded its market presence and delivered a positive socio-economic impact to rural Bosnia and Herzegovina.
